The Economics of Spam on Social Media: A Comprehensive Analysis of Bot Operations, Costs, and Revenues

Abstract
This paper provides a comprehensive economic analysis of spam bot operations on social media platforms. We examine the cost structure of running spam campaigns—including infrastructure, account acquisition, CAPTCHA-solving services, and labor—alongside the revenue streams that make spam profitable: affiliate marketing, credential theft, cryptocurrency scams, malware distribution, and influence operations. Drawing on empirical studies from 2010–2024, we estimate that large-scale spam operations can achieve profit margins of 100–1000×, with individual campaigns generating $10K–$1M+ annually. Platform defenses raise costs but also drive specialization in the spam supply chain, creating a persistent economic equilibrium that favors attackers. We conclude with policy recommendations targeting the economic incentives rather than purely technical mitigation.
